بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ
Woe to every scorner and mocker
ٱلَّذِى جَمَعَ مَالًا وَعَدَّدَهُۥ
Who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it.[1987]
Note [1987] Rather than spending in the way of Allāh.
يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُۥٓ أَخْلَدَهُۥ
He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.
كَلَّا ۖ لَيُنۢبَذَنَّ فِى ٱلْحُطَمَةِ
No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher.[1988]
Note [1988] i.e., Hellfire, which crushes and destroys all that enters it.
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْحُطَمَةُ
And what can make you know what is the Crusher?
نَارُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُوقَدَةُ
It is the fire of Allāh, [eternally] fueled,
ٱلَّتِى تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى ٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةِ
Which mounts directed at the hearts.[1989]
Note [1989] Covering them and penetrating them.
إِنَّهَا عَلَيْهِم مُّؤْصَدَةٌ
Indeed, it [i.e., Hellfire] will be closed down upon them
فِى عَمَدٍ مُّمَدَّدَةٍۭ
In extended columns.[1990]
Note [1990] Interpreted to be either columns of fire or columns of iron to which are chained the inmates of Hell.
